Jacob Bruining Smit

Jacob Bruining Smit was hoofdmachinist op het stoomschip AJAX van de KNSM. Dit schip verliet met een lading tarwe onder gezagvoerder Jan Lits op 7 augustus 1940 Southampton met bestemming Falmouth. Na voor anker te zijn gegaan in Solent, voer de AJAX op 8 augustus 1940 bij zonsopkomst verder met 5 andere stoomschepen in een onbeschermd convooi in Balmaha's formatie om aan te sluiten bij de schepen varende in het beschermde convooi onder de naam CW9-Peewit dat vertrokken was van Southend op 7 august 1940 om 07.00 u. Op 8 augustus 1940 om 9.00 u werd het schip aangevallen door +/- 50 duikbommenwerpers, die het schip verscheidende malen troffen. Het schip werd zwaar beschadigd en zonk in ongeveer 5 minuten tijd op 15 mijl ten westen van St. Catharina Point-Isle of Wight in positie 50°30’ N.B. en 01°40’ W.L. Vier leden van de bemanning kwamen om het leven. De matrozen Pieter Spaans (39 jr) en Arie Toet (25 jr) werden gedood, de stoker D. J. Baaij zwaar en 4 andere leden van de bemanning licht gewond. De hoofdmachinist Jacob Bruining Smit (54 jr) kwam om het leven in het water. De ramp had plaats 10`Z.W van St Catharina Point. De geredden werden door een motorboot van de Royal Air Force naar Portsmouth gebracht, de stoker Baaij (34 jr) is op 10 august 1940 alsnog aan zijn verwondingen overleden.D.J. Baaij (34 jr) en J.B. Smit (54 jr) werden begraven in graf (Y-3-25) op Milton Cemetery Portsmouth, UK. Op 6 oktober 1964 werden de lichamen verplaatst naar het Nederlands ereveld Mill Hill te Londen. A.Toet (25 jr) ligt begaven op het Nederlands ereveld Orry-la-Ville te Orry-la-Ville, Frankrijk, terwijl P. The Master of the SS AJAX, Capt. Jan Lits, reported that he was startled by the shout of the first officer from the bridge “FIFTY ENEMY AIRCRAFT ATTACKING”.“I immediately ran to the bridge but could not actually see the planes which attacked us owing to the bridge protection, but I understood that three enemy aircraft approached on our beam, two fighters and one bomber. They flew athwart ships and the bomber dropped a salvo of three bombs. I saw the first bombs fall on the foredeck in the forecastle, the other two fell almost instantly on No. 2 hatch, also forward. As the planes flew off they gave us a burst of machine-gun fire, but did not return for a second attack. The ship shuddered violently and listed 25 degrees to port. I think the whole of the port side forward was blown out. There were four men in the forecastle, which had collapsed; two of the men went down through No. 2 hold and managed to get out that way, but the other two were trapped and lost. There was no fire, but all the steam pipes broke, thus enveloping the ship in clouds of steam. Our naval gunner was at the gun on the bridge when the aircraft appeared and he let go at the enemy, immediately they attacked. He continued to fire after we were hit, in fact he continued to do so until the very last moment, and I consider he was very good indeed. He told me afterwards that he thought he had hit one of the planes as they flew over, but I cannot vouch for this. We lowered the port boat after we had been hit; The chief engineer, chief officer, a steward and a trimmer jumped overboard, the rest of the men got into the boat. I called out to the gunner, who even now was still manning his gun, and he jumped overboard as I stepped into the boat. The crew, including myself, numbered nineteen and we had on board one naval gunner. Of the crew, four men were killed and four injured. The confidential books went down with the ship". Sluiten

The Ajax was one of seven ships sunk from convoy CW9 in August 1940, when it was attacked by as many as 50 German bombers. She was hit by 3 bombs and sank within 5 minutes with the loss of four crew, coming to rest in an area of white sand dunes, in about 40m of water. Today she is fairly broken up with the bow being the most substantial part remaining. Lying on its port side the two anchors are still secured. There are portions of mast visible & the engine is largely upright. Currently only one boiler is exposed. The stern steering position is still visible. Sluiten
